Selena Scola: I Am an Advocate for Content Moderators and Workplace Safety
I am an advocate for Content Moderators and workplace safety.
In 2018 I launched a class action case against Facebook for unsafe work environment, "Selena Scola who claimed she had developed PTSD after viewing instances of rape, suicide, and murder during her job" (gizmodo 2022). My case has been settled, though there’s a lot more work that needs to be done within this space. The article linked above is another content moderator case, this time taking on tiktok.
Having #PTSD is a disability; something one is asked to declare on job applications or may need to apply for disability accommodations during academic studies. Some Content Moderators (this is a tech industry desk job) have been so negatively impacted by this work that they are no longer able to hold a job, they are fully reliant on government supplemental services, living below the poverty line, or they have become homeless. Once one goes on supplemental government services our tax dollars are paying for these companies' bad behavior.
This bad company behavior is worse overseas. If you have felt one bit of emotion over the Ukraine War, Content Moderators are working overtime removing all of the war crimes that you don’t see, as they are unfolding on live streaming video; they are watching and hearing Ukrainan’s get killed in real time. In Africa Content Moderators are paid as little as $1.50 a day for this work, without mental health supportive services, and living in poverty, while being exploited by Big Tech.
When does the United Nations, US Congress, and the World Health Organization step in to regulate these platforms and keep us from being exploited? This is not an isolated case or problem within one nation or company, this is a global concern, a violation of human rights, and of our dignity.
